COVID-19 Statement of MSNJ President, Marc J. Levine, MD 4.7.20
Tuesday, April 7, 2020
COVID-19 has now forced our families, our profession, our communities and our country to face unprecedented obstacles. Shortages of PPEs, illness and fatalities are a part of everyday news bites. Financially, 401ks are declining while unemployment rises. We are disconnected socially as we practice social distancing, an obscure term that will forever become part of our vocabulary. When we do venture from our homes, we have a difficult time recognizing each other behind masks of one type or another.
In New Jersey, starting on April 3, 2020, by Executive Order 114, the American Flag flies at half mast in honor of those who have perished, BUT the half that still remains represents our will and determination to fight for the future. We are now living through and overcoming a national crisis that will forever be taught and studied in history books and schools. Did our profession band together to provide care for patients? Did our profession band together to support each other? Did our profession along with other government agencies help lead a coordinated effort to defeat COVID? Did our profession lead research teams, conduct studies and develop drugs and treatment protocols to help our patients? The answer to all will be YES.
From physician offices, testing centers and emergency rooms to critical care units and field hospitals WE are writing the playbook that others will draw upon for years to come. With each day tremendous progress is made as we understand and do what needs to be done. WE will get past this crisis together at which time the American Flag will once again be hoisted to its’ peak. As we all scramble to care for our patients in this time of social isolation please take a moment to check on a family member and a colleague.
I urge all of you to go to www.msnj.org which has daily updates on COVID 19. You will find up to date information regarding treatment guidelines, medical resources as well as promising medications and new screening tools. In addition, evolving government regulations and economic resources for physician practices can be found on the website.
As always, please BE WELL, BE SAFE, and BE PROUD as we defeat this healthcare challenge together.
